SLA Salutes its Fallen War Heroes During Anniversary Commemoration

Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment (SLA), during its 123rd anniversary commemoration ceremony on Wednesday (20) at the Regimental Headquarters, Panagoda recalled the vivid memories of their fallen War Heroes with dignity and honour.

The day’s agenda got to a start soon after the arrival of the chief guest, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army for the ceremony. A Guard Turnout at the entrance to the venue greeted the visiting Army Chief in accordance with military traditions, seconds after he was warmly received.

A two-minute silence observed by all those present at the commemorative ceremony signalled the onset of the day’s proceedings, followed by retreat when the citation in memory of the fallen War Heroes began to beam. Recitation of the Regimental song as well as the National anthem afterwards paved the way for religious observances of all denominations, Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic and Christian.

The commemoration ceremony, dignified by the presence of the Army Chief reached its climax and solemnity as the chief guest, accompanied by Colonel of the Regiment, senior SLA officers, Commanding officers, et al honoured all fallen SLA War Heroes placing floral wreaths at the foot of the SLA War Hero memorial in the compound.

White-clad widows, children and next of kin of SLA War Heroes, seconds after that, followed suit and walked to the memorial in line in a moving scene as tears rolling down reflected fond memories of their loved ones. Subsequent to the placing of wreaths, the day’s main event drew to a close with the sounding of the retreat as dusk fell.
