Commander Meets His Eminence New Cardinal

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army Tuesday (28) evening had an audience with Rt Rev Dr Malcolm Ranjith, the newly appointed only Asian Cardinal at the Bishop House, Colombo.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya is the first service chief to make obeisance to the new Cardinal after His Eminence was ordained as a Cardinal in a ceremony at Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome last month.

The Cardinal during his interaction with the visiting Army chief lauded the continuing humanitarian roles of the Army for the benefit of the underprivileged and invoked blessings on the Army and its forward march for development, resettlement and reconciliation.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya reciprocated sentiments expressed by His Eminence and wished him best of luck and all strength to carry out his new responsibilities and duties as a Cardinal.

He also explained the string of development projects and measures that have been hitherto effected by Army troops in the north and east to win the hearts and minds of the people, rekindling hopes for a better future.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya before his departure received blessings from the Cardinal Dr Malcolm Ranjith who was ordained by Pope Benedict XVI on 20th November 2010.
