ARMY PERSONNEL SUFFERING PERMANENT TOTAL DISABILITY FOLLOWING ACCIDENTS WHILST ON DUTY TO RECEIVE FULL SALARY AND ALLOWANCES

Press Release

ALL Army personnel remain permanently disable for the rest of their lives due to accidents while on duty are to be paid their full salary and allowances until they reach 55 years of age in accordance with the provisions of an Army Routine Order, issued by Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya.

As at present, the full salary and allowances are paid only to those Army personnel killed in action and those sustained severe injuries while fighting and also for those who proceeded on retirement on medical grounds.

Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs has granted approval to adopt the provisions in the Public Administration circular 22/93 (IV) for military personnel who suffer total disability as well due to accidents met with while on duty, while in the performance of any act within the scope of duty or as a consequence of any act, executed in the line of duty or while proceeding from the place of work on duty or while returning to place of work.

Contribution to the Widows and Orphans Pension (W&OP) fund is thus recovered from the salary, and the pension the officer would be drawing at the age of 55 years is also to be revised.

If any member of the Army willing to obtain those benefits under the provisions of this circular, compensation and pension hitherto obtained in terms of Public Administration circular 346 and 22/93 should be recovered. Further compensation in accordance with provisions of the Public Administration circular 21/88 shall not be granted to recipients who continue to obtain benefits under the above-mentioned circular 22/93 (IV).
