Commander Hails Role of Officers &;amp; Other Ranks in Wanni Battles

LIEUTENANT GENERAL Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army made the time Thursday (26) morning to meet a cross-section of the soldiers serving Kilinochchi and brief them on current developments taking place in relation to the Army and the country at large.

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya was received on arrival at Kilinochchi Security Forces Headquarters (SFHQ) by Brigadier B.A Perera, 58 Division Commander. A guard turnout greeted the visiting Army Chief.

Officers from Mullaittivu and Wanni SFHQs were also at Kilinochchi to listen to their Commander.

In his address, Lieutenant General Jayasuriya explained the gathering on the Army’s future vision and welfare measures, being implemented with the support of the government.

He also used the occasion to profusely thank each and every soldier for his contribution to the success story of the Wanni humanitarian operations. In recognition of the invaluable commitment and bravery of all those officers and other rankers, a special parchment is to be given away shortly as a token of appreciation, the Commander told the troops.

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya reminded the soldiers of the continuing security concerns in the Wanni theatre of previous military operations. “Though LTTE terrorism was wiped out, there could be still terrorist elements or their proxies who have infiltrated mingling with ordinary civilians in resettled areas and you should be alert to such movements,” the Commander said.

In a specific note of emphasis, the Commander asked his officers to look into welfare matters, related to soldiers in a more enthusiastic manner since the brutal War has now ended. “Officers should talk to soldiers often and resolve their problems, if any and redress their grievances. It is also equally important to look after disabled soldiers for the rest of their lives.   The Army is going to put up a Wellness Resort in Anuradhapura with all facilities to accommodate those permanently disabled soldiers. They could stay there with their families for a week or two in the cottages for rest and relaxation,” the Commander pointed out.

As he does always, the Commander underlined the importance of discipline in the Army while safeguarding the image of the Army.  He also instructed his officers to be more precise and creative in performing their duties and making correct decisions.  Decisions should be made collectively and shared among all of them after completion of a task, the Commander further added.
