Army Troops Launch Two More Irrigational Projects

TROOPS in the 22 Division under “Negenahira Udanaya” programme have actively taken part in two important irrigation projects in the East.

Renovation of the Rangiri Ulpatha tank and the irrigation canal running from Unnachchi tank to Vavunathivu area were the prime responsibilities, entrusted to the Army.

The renovation of the Rangiri Ulpatha tank was launched on 3rd September 2009 after initially attending to the clearing of jungle areas around the tank bund and its surroundings. Under the second phase, repairs to the tank bund are to be carried out with the support of Army engineers.

The renovation and repairs to the 23 km long and 6m wide irrigation canal from Unnachchi tank to Vavunathivu canal are to be done simultaneously before the rainy season commences.

Completion of both those projects will help irrigate new paddy lands to the extent of 1000 acres more in Batticaloa District and another 500 acres in Trincomalee District.
