Ms Aamna Rafiq, Research Associate, Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI), Islamabad, Pakistan contributed to the Session 2 on Thursday (30) speaking about ‘Social Media and Authenticity: Global Security Challenges’ very briefly covered challenges against global security with an elaborate analysis of Social Networks, User Generated Contents (UGCs), Play and Game Sites (PGS), Trading & Marketing Sites (TMSs), etc.

She also defined what social media means to many and how it operates in an irresponsible manner. What is Social Media?

A group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content forming the basis.

She also gave some statistics pertaining to numbers using Worldwide Social Media Users during 2010 - 2021. What Is Happening Right Now? Is it a Search for Authenticity?.

“As we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns - the ones we don't know we don't know”

She also went on to point out Global Security Challenges and Colonization, Social Media Empires Breach of Individual Privacy and Security, Misuse of Data by Platforms giving examples and showing Facebook and Twitter Data Scandals.

Crisis of Legitimacy and Faith in Security Institutions is another aspect. Who are the gate keepers of Information? Decentralization of communication power, Controlling the amplification of fake news? These are issues that have to be dealt with.
