Sri Lanka Army wheelchair players rose to the top of the pack, sealing two gold medals out of four categories they contested during the Labuan Open of the Malaysian ITF Wheelchair Tour 2018 in Malaysia. The tournament drew to a close on Tuesday (21).
The Sri Lankan gold medalists are military personnel who are confined to wheelchairs after some of them fell victim to minefields during the internal conflict which ended in 2009.
Corporal Gamini Dissanayake of Gemunu Watch dominated the men’s singles line-up and bagged his gold after defeating fellow-Sri Lankan R. Ranaweera with a score of 6-1, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5).
The game saw Gamini and his teammate, Lance Bombardier D.S.R Dharmasena secure the gold medal with a 7-5, 6-2 score against R. Ranaweera and Jayasundera in a stiff match.
