24 Div Troops Assist DMC to Renovate Affected Houses in Periyanilawanei

Troops of the 23 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) and 3 (V) Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) of the 24 Division under the Security Force Headquarters – East (SFHQ-E) has offered their generous assistance to the Ampara Disaster Management Center (DMC) for renovation of stormy wind-affected houses along the Periyanilawanei - Kalmunei patch in Ampara district on 01 March 2018.

Those houses were earlier constructed by the government after the Tsunamis hit here in the year 2004. Roofing sheets of 54 homes out of 75 homes were completely damaged affecting 432 families as a result of this natural disaster. Some of their belongings and essentials were also lost due to gushing winds that swept across the eastern coast of Sri Lanka on that fateful day.

Army troops of the 24 Division in coordination with the DMC workforce come forward as first respondents to rescue and assist those people when the disaster struck on 1 March.

Major General Santhusitha Pananwala, Commander - Security Forces - East directed Major General Mahinda Mudalige, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 24 Division to employ maximum possible troops to speed up reconstruction work and make those families comfortable.

Moreover, Mr Thusitha P Wanigasinghe, District Secretary for Ampara and other all religious dignitaries and community leaders appreciated the roles being played by the troops for reconstruction and reconciliation roles.

General Officer Commanding, 24 Division is carefully supervising the work and assisting to complete the task.
