“BUDO” Self-Defence Martial Art Course at Security Force Headquarters - Wanni Ends

A selected set of Officers and Other Ranks representing all formations under the Security Force Headquarters - Wanni were trained on “Kiyoshiryu Budo” a self defence martial art.

The Budo Martial Art style was initially introduced by Major General Jagath Gunawardena as the then General Officer Commanding of the 57 Division to train Emergency Response Team soldiers with blessings of the Commander of the Army.

Continuing the same, the first Budo Martial Art training session commenced at the Security Force Headquarters - Wanni on 01 August and continued for 15 working days. Trainee students completed the training course on 17 August.

“Kiyoshiryu Budo” is one of the well-known martial art styles practised by many countries all around the world. The founder of this martial art style was the then Chief of Underworld Alleviating Unit of National Police Agency in Japan, ‘Headmaster (Soke) Hanshi Kiyoshi Sakamotho” (Black Belt 10th Dan).

Unlike other styles, “Kiyoshiryu Budo” is not merely a martial art but it also has been designed by its forefathers as a self-defence fighting method which aims to sustain a person with a stable mentality in any challenging situation such as mental or physical suppression. This will enrich a person with a sound knowledge and proper training to accomplish hard tasks preciously, efficiently and effectively. Managing urgent circumstances using self-confidence and strength is another vital factor that generates through “Kiyoshiryu Budo”.

The short term course conducted at the Security Force Headquarters - Wanni was basically designed to train soldiers when they have to confront a situation causing multiple effects for their personal safety and impeding their prime duty. This course will be a great impact for soldiers to maintain their physical strength and mental stability under any circumstances when accomplishing their routine tasks and special duties such as in emergencies and Internal Security networks.

As a constructive approach towards the training, the Commander Security Forces - Wanni Major General Jagath Gunawardena has planned to continue this Course in a series of training sessions. In that context, SFHQ-W expects to train over 2000 soldiers (Emergency Response Team) representing all under command formations. During the first stage 25 Officers and 1000 Other Ranks were trained and they passed out on Saturday (17).

The course will be conducted by a team of well experienced and qualified Army instructors along with one of the veteran martial art instructors in Sri Lanka Renshi Clement De Zoysa (Black Belt 8th Dan) as the chief instructor of the course.

The series of all training sessions will be closely monitored by General Staff Officer II (Training) Major S.U.B Pilimathalawwe under the directions of the Colonel General Staff of the Headquarters Security Force - Wanni Lieutenant Colonel G.B.W.M.R.K.R Bandara.

The Commander Security Forces - Wanni, Major General Jagath Gunawardena attended the closing ceremony and awarding of certificates to the attendees.
