‘Mitra Shakti’ Now Entering Final Week

The 4th India-Sri Lanka joint training Exercise, ‘Mitra Shakti’, designed to enhance understanding of transnational terrorism, inter-operability skills, conduct of joint tactical operations, sharing of each other’s experiences, etc, which began in the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) Regimental Headquarters premises in Ambepussa on Monday (24), is fast nearing completion, attendees busy with different training modules.

On Wednesday (26), the Exercise attendees underwent physical tests to select the Best before lectures on different types of operations, concepts of Special Infantry Operations Training (SIOT), map reading, interrogation techniques, etc commenced. Both Sri Lankan and Indian course attendees also took part in recreational activities towards the end of the day.

On Thursday (27), training sessions turned more interesting with lectures, focused on suicide bombers, counter measures, detection and disposal of improvised explosive devices, chemical weapons, biological hazards, etc.

The following day (28) was much of a relaxed day for attendees as participating Indian Army troops demonstrated a Yoga programme inside the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) playground. Yet, during early hours, the trainees learnt more about instinctive firing and jungle lane firing before other segments in the programme got underway.

Director General General Staff, Major General A.P. De Z Wickremaratne meanwhile on Saturday (29) as an observer visited the location and mingled with the trainees, speaking to them. He also met Indian troops and watched a demonstration presented by the Quick Reaction Team (QRT) of the Commandos of Sri Lanka Army.

A contingent of 45 Indian Army personnel, including 6 officers are participating in the two-week long Exercise, ‘Mitra Shakti’ - 2016 while the Sri Lanka Army is represented by Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) troops of equal number.

Major General Chagi Gallage, Director General Infantry coordinates and supervises the 4th joint Exercise which would inevitably promote good relations and military cooperation between both armies. The Exercise will end on Sunday (Nov 6).

On Sunday, those Indian troops visited the IPKF monument, War Heroes’ monument, Galle Face and several other places of interest.
