‘Gunner Supercross - 2018’ Makes Exciting Records

Thrill, excitement and fun pervaded across the Gunner Track at Minneriya for the 13th consecutive year when 183 racing drivers and riders including Army riders on Sunday (29) exhibited their unparalleled motor sporting skills during the ‘Gunner Supercross - 2018’ that got underway at Minneriya Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA) complex amid a record gathering of motor racing fans.

The exciting event received further recognition as Secretary Defence, Mr Kapila Waidyarathne PC and Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral C Wijegunaratne at the invitation of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake graced the day’s supercross as distinguished guests.

Challenging driving and riding competitors enthusiastically participated in the amusement-filled event under different categories, organized by the SLA on the directions of Major General Rukmal Dias, Colonel Commandant, SLA.

The SLA in combination with Sri Lanka Automobile Sports Drivers Association (SLADA) mesmerized thousands of motor racing enthusiasts during the event and gave away a heap of valuable gifts and trophies to the achievers.

Secretary Defence, Mr Kapila Waidyarathne PC, Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral C Wijegunaratne, Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake and a few Senior Officers joined the distribution of accolades for the winners.

Car and motorbike events and jeep events in the ‘Gunner Supercross - 2018’ decorated the thrilling spectacle which drew a packed group of spectators. The SLA collects funds for welfare projects of own troops through this spectacular show every year.

Sri Lanka Army Drivers and Riders in group truck and jeep events and motorcycle events showed their colours, posing a challenge to other competitors. Among the Army competitors were several Senior Officers both serving and retired.

A special show of heavy artillery, accessories and equipment was also on display as another attraction on the sidelines of the main event.

A large gathering of Senior Officers both retired and serving, motor racing fans and spectators witnessed the event throughout the day.
