Gajaba Regiment's (GR) pet project of the year, ‘Gajaba Viru Saviya’, award of scholarships to sons and daughters of Gajaba Regiment War Heroes got off the ground at GR Regimental Centre, Saliyapura on Tuesday (13) amid a large gathering of invitees.
Major General Shavendra Silva, Colonel of the Regiment, GR and Adjutant General of the Sri Lanka Army at the invitation of Mrs Sujeewa Nelson, Chairperson, GR Seva Vanitha Unit graced the distribution ceremony of scholarships and school accessories.
The day's programme awarded 50 scholarships to children of fallen, differently-able and medically unfit War Heroes who have done exceptionally well in Grade 5, GCE O/L examination and those who had been selected to universities for higher education.
Each Grade - 5 achiever receives Rs 1500/= per month for a period of one year and those studying for the A/L after successful O/L results would also get Rs 1500/= per month for a period of two years. University entrants under the same scholarship scheme are entitled to Rs 5000/= every month during a period of three years.
During the same ceremony, 500 school-goers of War Hero families received gift packs containing all necessary school accessories, each pack, worth about Rs 3000/=. GR Seva Vanitha ladies have been instrumental in providing necessary funds for the project in addition to the well-wishers and donors who had directly supplied the requirements to the GR Regimental Headquarters at Saliyapura.
GR Regimental Headquarters every year launches this mega distribution of scholarships and school accessories with the intention of raising educational standards of students of GR families. Selection of those recipients is carried out by a special committee of GR Officers and members of the GR Seva Vanitha Unit.
