‘Commonwealth Games’ Bronze Medalist Corporal Lakmal Returns to a Rousing Welcome

The weightlifter, Corporal J.A.C Lakmal of the 4 Commando Regiment (CR) of the Sri Lanka Army Sports Club who won Bronze in the men’s 56kg Weight category at the 21st Commonwealth Games was welcomed in a simple ceremony at the Colombo Airport on his return to Sri Lanka on Wednesday (11).

Hon Dayasiri Jayasekara, Minister of Sports, together with officials of the Sports Ministry, Brigadier P.W.G.J.K Wijesundara, Deputy Chairperson, Army Body-Building, Weight-Lifting and Power Lifting Committee and several Army Officers were at the airport to welcome him.

Corporal J.A.C Lakmal of the Army SC representing the Sri Lankan team cleared a total weight of 248 kg to clinch the Bronze medal in the Men’s 56kg weight category.

Corporal J.A.C Lakmal of the Army SC managed 114 kg and 134 kg in the clean and jerk event during the 21st Commonwealth Games to qualify for the finals.

Corporal J.A.C Lakmal is a member of the 11 member-strong weight-lifting contingent for the Commonwealth Games, inclusive of 04 female weight-lifters.

On 4 April 2018, over 6,600 athletes and team officials from 71 nations and territories converged on the Gold Coast for an 11-day mega sporting event in the Commonwealth Games - 2018.

With the proud support of close to 15,000 passionate and friendly volunteers, a spectacle of 18 sports and 7 para-sports will be contested during the Commonwealth Games.
