‘Avibimaka Giniyama’ Recalls Memories of Kokavil Attack

Trying to fill a long-awaited void, related to the true accounts of bravery and sacrifices that had been made by Army soldiers in the battlefields before 2009, an epic, authored by a serving Army Officer, titled ‘Avibimaka Giniyama’ (heat of the battlefield) was released to the public on Friday (21) at Mahaweli Centre in Colombo.

Major Sujith Chaminda Edirisinghe, the author during a ceremony, attended by a gathering of distinguished invitees, including three survivors in the famous 1990 Kokavil LTTE attack, presented the maiden copy of his epic to the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake and the mother of the first recipient of the Parama Weera Vibushanaya (PWV) late Captain Saliya Aladeniya.

The book, dedicated to tell the heroic saga at Kokavil in 1990, in which Captain Saliya Aladeniya made the supreme sacrifice along with 54 fellow Army personnel and 4 civil staffers without surrendering to the terrorists, narrates the sequence of events that occurred during a period of 26 days of siege after terrorists surrounded the camp.

The author in his brief talk to the gathering explained what inspired him to document the stories surrounding the attack on the Kokavil camp where the TV transmission tower stood.
