Worst-affected Kilinochchi & Mullaittivu Flood Victims Begin Returning Home

Multifarious relief measures such as supply of cooked meals, dry rations, clothes, medicine, immediate needs and transport of patients, coupled with provision of post-flood assistance by way of cleaning homes, water wells, blocked waterways and removing of fallen trees and debris, etc are currently in place in flood-affected areas in Kilinochchi, although normalcy was fast returning to those livelihoods. Closely directed by Major General Ralph Nugera, Commander, Security Forces - Kilinochchi, a fair share of the relief project has been entrusted to the 57 Division, commanded by Major General Vijitha Ravipriya, General Officer Commanding, 57 Division since heavy damages have occurred to areas coming under the purview of the 57 Division in Kilinochchi.

Colombo Maha Karuna Buddhist Association and Manusath Derana project joined hands together with the Army to donate a stock of essentials for displaced personnel during a programme held on Friday (28) at Kandawali Maha Vidyalaya Relief Centre in Kilinochchi, coordinated by the General Officer Commanding, 57 Division. Commander, SF-KLN was present there to deliver those relief packets.

Members of the Maha Karuna Association including Ven Dr Karadetiyana Gunarathna Thero & Singaporeans with Manusath Derana officials, Brigade Commander, 573 Brigade, Commanding Officer, 1 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, gathered and arranged the donation project together with government officials. 300 plus affected civilians on this occasion received dry rations, school accessories, essential items for pregnant mothers, sanitary items, shoes, garments, etc.

Meanwhile, on the instructions of the Commander, Security Forces - Kilinochchi, Major General Ralph Nugera, troops are engaged in various relief projects in close cooperation with state authorities and other agencies.

Troops of the 57 Division under the Security Force Headquarters - Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) in liaison with the 'Sunshine' Food Company in Jaffna on the directions of the Major General Vijitha Ravipriya, General Officer Commanding, 57 Division, supported the distribution of relief meal parcels, inclusive of rice, sugar, dhal, canned fish, noodles, biscuit packets, tea, Samaposha, flour and other daily needs among 800 plus flood victims in Rathnapuram, Barathipuram, Ponnagar, Indupuram, Uriyan and Korakkankaddu areas on Friday (28).

In the meantime, 6 Gemunu Watch troops under command to the 683 Brigade on Wednesday (26) using sand bags and other equipment, renovated and plastered the .the outflow opening of the Udayarkattu tank, situated in the general area of the 68 Division, close to Mullaittivu. Similarly, 591 Brigade under command to the Security Force Headquarters - Mullaittivu donated mineral water bottles to flood affected families in Selvapuram village with the cooperation of the Edinbarough (Pvt) Limited on Thursday (27).

Meanwhile, 50 troops of 14 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment & 6 Sri Lanka National Guard of the 641 Brigade of the 64 Division under the SFHQ-MLT on Saturday (29) cleaned Mannakadal School, Pandarawani Community Hall which were used as temporary camps for displaced personnel due to adverse weather on the directions of the 64 Division GOC and under the supervision of the 641 Brigade Commander.

Troops of the 571 Brigade under 57 Division of the Security Force Headquarters - Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) in liaison with the Manusath Derana and Ceylinco Insurance Co. Ltd, supported the distribution of relief meal parcels among 250 flood victims in Rathnapuram, Anandapuram and Barathipuram areas on Saturday (30).

Meanwhile, troops of the 573 Brigade in liaison with Ceylinco Insurance Co. Ltd distributed 150 dry ration packs among civilians in Pulliyanpokkanai Grama Niladari Division on Saturday (30).

Meanwhile, ‘Muslim Aid’ charity organization with the support of the 2 Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) troops of the 66 Division distributed packs of sanitary-ware and hygienic items among flood-affected families, each worth Rs 3000/= on Saturday (29) after its members visiting the displaced persons housed at the Jayapuram Maha Vidyalaya in Pooneryn, Kilinochchi.

51 flood affected families received those relief packets.

Brigadier G.W.D.K Jayathilake,General Officer Commanding (GOC), 66 Division, Commanding Officers of 2 SLNG, 15 Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA), Staff Officers of 66 Divisions and 663 Brigade were present at the time the donation was made.

215 flood-affected civilians in Shivanagar in the general area of Paranthan of the 66 Division under the responsibility of the Security Force Headquarters – Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) received dry rations to the value of Rs 3 lakhs, following sponsorship provided by Mr Aruna Fonseka and his team in the NATURUB group of companies.

Those dry ration packets, including rice, dhal, sugar, dry fish, milk powder, sprats, soap, clothes, and other essentials were distributed by donor representatives, together with Brigadier G.W.D.K Jayathilake, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 66 Division, 662 Brigade Commander, 20 Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) and 1 Gajaba Regiment (GR) Commanding Officers and several others.

Meanwhile, troops of the 56 Division Headquarters on the directions of the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Major General Prabath Dematanpitiya went to flood- affected areas in Kokeliya and distributed dry rations, clothes and other essentials among five families in Kandarodasikulam village on Wednesday (26).

He also took steps to provide several tin sheets for two victimized families to cover their damaged roofs due to floods.

Troops of 17 (Volunteer) Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment under the supervision of its Commanding Officer renovated these damaged houses.

591 and 592 Brigades of the 59 Division under the Security Force Headquarters - Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) on Sunday (30) during an arrangement at Murippu Community Hall distributed a large stock of flood relief packets among flood-affected 32 families.

David Peiris Motor Company (Pvt) Ltd, has dispatched the stocks for distribution through the Sri Lanka Army after having contacted the SFHQ-MLT.
