Woman Soldiers to Receive Housing Bonanza

The inaugural project for construction of new houses to the newly-enlisted woman soldiers of Kilinochchi started off on the National Independence Day (4th Feb) in their respective residential areas.

Under the project 100 new houses for those new woman soldiers are to be built by Army troops with the funds allocated by the government to the Northern Governor’s office for northern development.

Under the Phase 1, twenty houses are to be erected in Thirumurukkandi, Bharathipuram and Vishwamadu areas (8 houses) under 57 Division, Thewampiddi, Mallawi, Mallawi North, Ponnagar and Nachchikuda areas (6 houses) under 65 Division and Shivaneshwari, Ranjipuram, Pudamurippumalai, Paranthan, Mukkampiddi, Kandapuram and Akkarayankulam areas (6 houses) at a cost of Rs 5 lakhs each.

Major General (Retd) G.A Chandrasiri, Governor for Northern Province a few days ago released Rs 10 million towards the project as the first installment. Brigadier General Services at Security Forces Headquarters - Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) acknowledged it on behalf of the Commander, SFHQ-KLN.

The project followed a productive discussion the senior officers has had very recently with the parents and relatives of those woman soldiers, still under training at the SFHQ-KLN.

Considering their economic plight, it was decided to have these new houses constructed for them as early as possible in the same plots of land that had been allotted by the government under the resettlement programme in Kilinochchi.

Engineer Service Regiment troops have volunteered to build these houses in above-mentioned resettled areas as early as possible.

First sod-cutting and foundation-laying ceremony in respective areas took place simultaneously coincide with the National Independence Day.
