Wheelchair Tennis Players off to Bangkok

 

Four Sri Lankan wheelchair tennis players are due to leave for Thailand on September 20 to take part in the Bangkok Rating Tournament. After three days in Thailand they will head for Malaysia to play in a tournament there.

Three wheelchair tournaments are also scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka in February 2016.
 
Suresh Ranjan Dharmasena of Kahatagasdigiliya Anuradhapura, one of the players selected to go to Thailand said he joined the Sri Lanka Army in 2007 and had served in the Artillery Regiment. He had lost a leg in a land mine explosion in Pudukudiiruppu.

After the tragic incident he had the opportunity to engage in wheelchair tennis.

Lasantha Suresh Ranaweera of Makandura is another player scheduled to leave for Thailand. He had joined the Gajaba Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army in 2003 and lost a leg in 2008.

He said had taken part in matches played in Malaysia and Thailand and he was rated fifth in Sri Lanka. He said he hoped to be among first 50 in international rating.

Prasanna Jayalath Wijesiri of Madawachchiya Anuradhapura said he joined Sinha Regiment in 2007 and lost a leg in 2009. After that he had taken a liking to wheelchair tennis. He is now in 156th position in international rating.

Dharmasiri from Kithulgala was also one of the four players who had joined the Army in 2007. He lost his leg 2008 whilst in active service in Kalmunai. Dharmasiri is currently placed 6th in Sri Lanka rating. (Courtesy : Daily Mirror)
