The Inter Regiment Sports Committee for the Disable had its wheelchair tournament on Thursday (23) evening at Sri Lanka Light Infantry basketball court at Panagoda.
Twelve disable teams under ten medically categorized sports events every year hold this tournament for disable War Heroes affected with different types of physical disabilities, following serious injuries sustained in the brutal LTTE terrorism in the past 30 years.
The wheelchair basketball tournament this year competed by Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI), Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR), Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR), Gajaba Regiment (GR) and Commando Regiment (CR) teams had five in each side for the finals on Thursday (23) evening.
The trophy for championship was clinched by sportsmen in Gajaba Regiment. VIR and SLLI teams respectively emerged runners-up in the wheelchair tournament. Colonel K.J Jayaweera, SLLI Regimental Center Commandant, as Chief Guest on the occasion gave away trophies to the winners.
Senior officers and a gathering of basketball fans in the Army witnessed the day’s exciting tournament.
