Wedding Bells Ring for Three More Disabled War Heroes

Three more differently able War Heroes of Gajaba Regiment (GR) and Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR), resident at Ragama Ranaviru Sevana Rehabilitation Centre entered the wedded bliss this morning (20) during a grand joint wedding reception, organized by Gampaha ‘Siyanaewe Api’ organization for the 5th consecutive year as a symbol of recognition of their services to the Nation.

The combined wedding ceremony of Corporal W.M.N.H.J Wanninayake of 14 GR, Corporal W.R.A.U.D Ranasinghe of 10 GR and Lance Corporal H.G.J Pushpakumara of 5 VIR assumed greater importance with the gracious presence of their Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva as the Chief Guest cum the attesting witness for bridegrooms.

On Thursday (20), the picturesque ‘Saketha Medura’ Hotel wore wedding garbs and facilitated the three new couples to leave their signatures on the dotted line in matrimonial knot, amid a huge gathering of well-wishers and relatives of all 6 families.

Corporal W.M.N.H.J Wanninayake of 14 GR, hailing from North Central Province, having joined the Army sustained injuries during a head-on clash with LTTE terrorists in Andankulam and turned physically disabled. His disability however did not pose any bar to his unfailing romance with Buddhika Kasundani in the Southern Province who often visited him while he was undergoing rehabilitation at Ranaviru Sevana. His dream princess received blessings of their parents for the marriage and joined him forever.

Corporal W.R.A.U.D Ranasinghe of 10 GR who also sustained critical injuries during a fierce battle against terrorists in Vishwamadu has been under rehabilitation at Ragama Ranaviru Sevana for several years. His bride, Inusha Geethanjali Indunil was proposed to him and they both agreed to the wedlock with the blessings of their elders.

Lance Corporal H.G.J Pushpakumara of 5 VIR chose Dewagegedara Samanthi Nimesha as his fiancée before he fell victim in the final Puthumathalan battlefield. Having lost part of a limb, he became confined to the Ragama Ranaviru Sevana until the D-day of Love called him to the wedding table.

Matrimonial rites and rituals, Poruwa ceremonies, registration, wedding cake cutting, exchange of gifts with parents, etc adorned the wedding hall since the arrival of both the bride and the bridegroom at the auspicious minute. The mammoth arrangement, a form of a tribute, made to the dedicated and selfless services of those defenders of the country, was made possible, thanks to the initiatives of Gampaha businessmen’s forum, ‘Siyanaewe Api’ who have earlier conducted four more such weddings of differently able War Heroes.

‘Siyanaewe Api’, footed the entire cost of the wedding arrangement including all paraphernalia, wedding costumes, vehicles, refreshments and buffet lunch, music band, wedding cakes, etc. Directorate of Rehabilitation of the Army as in the previous instances coordinated the entire project.

Soon after the marriage registration was over, the happily married couples with clasped hands greeted the Commander of the Army showing their gratitude before they sat for a group photo with the day’s Chief Guest.

Before the Commander’s exit from the venue, he made separate cash and material gifts to just-wedded couples while extending his warm greetings.

Major General Channa Goonetilleke, Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Adjutant General, Major General Nandana Udawatte, Colonels of Regiments of both GR and VIR, Director Rehabilitation and several senior officers witnessed the wedding ceremony.
