War Heroes Month Starts Tomorrow (7)

A RANAWIRU wrist band and a miniature flag will be presented to President Mahinda Rajapaksa tomorrow at Temple Trees to commemorate War Heroes Month from May 07 to June 07.

Addressing the media yesterday at the MCNS, Additional Secretary Defence Ministry Willie Gamage said it is important to pay respect to soldiers who sacrificed their lives or were disabled in protecting the country from terrorists for over 25 years. Therefore, War Heroes Month will be held from May 07 to June 07 to respect the war heroes.

He observed that many programs and activities including religious ceremonies will be held to commemorate the War Heroes Month.

Gamage said that a town (Ippalogama) for war heroes with a school, parks, grounds and all facilities are under construction in Kalawewa, Anuradhapura.

The Government will grant Rs.600,000 relief for the families of war heroes and the rest will be granted in soft loans”, he added.

The housing project for war heroes is estimated to cost around Rs.900 million and the funds were received from Api Wenuwen Api, organisation and individual funds.

“Construction of around 1,500 houses is to be completed by end of this year. To collect more funds, the Defence Ministry has launched a program by issuing 10 million rubber wrist bands.

These wrist bands will be sold everywhere to collect funds for war heroes welfare”, he added.

MCNS Director General Lakshman Hulugalla said a program has been launched under the direction of the President to light clay lamps in every house from this Poya to every Poya in the future to respect the war heroes.
