Wanni Troops Gift New Temple to Re-settled Villagers

Security Force Headquarters - Wanni (SFHQ-W) in order to assist enhance the spiritual advancement of villagers in the re-settled Selalihinigama in the Wanni constructed a residential quarters for nuns and a complete Buddhist temple for poverty-stricken villagers in the same premises, thanks to an initiative, taken by Major General Kumudu Perera, Commander, Security Forces - Wanni (SF-W).

During a recent visit to the area, Major General Perera unexpectedly spotted a tiny dilapidated residential cottage (nunnery), made of wattle and daub where three feeble Buddhist nuns were conducting religious performances amidst extreme hardships.

A few days after this visit, Major General Perera got the assistance of the philanthropist, Mr Dimuthu Tennakoon of Sri Lankan Airlines for construction of dwelling places for nuns but found that the premises did not have a proper temple for religious observances of both nuns and devotees.

Within weeks, a handful of donors, Mr Chamath Abeygunawardena and his wife, Mrs Inoka, Mrs Ashoka Ramanayake of Ramanayake Motors, Colombo, together with Major General Prabath Dematanpitiya, General Officer Commanding, 56 Division lavishly contributed to the notion of constructing a full-fledged temple in the same location, equipped with a pagoda, shrine room and a Bodhiya and to be named as Sri Sudarshanaramaya.

On Duruthu Full Moon Poya day (20), the pinnacle atop the new pagoda was unveiled, relics in the pagoda enshrined and the Buddha statue in the shrine was placed in the presence of a large gathering of devotees and donors, headed by Major General Kumudu Perera, Major General Prabath Dematanpitiya and a host of senior SFHQ-W Officers and Other Rankers.

An alms-giving organized afterwards to monks at the new Sri Sudarshanarama Viharaya with the participation of both nuns and monks followed the supply of free lunch to over 1000 villagers who gathered for the Pinkama at the nunnery. jordan Sneakers | NIKE
