Volunteer Force Sports Stars Shine Making New Records

Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) officers and other rankers who turned athletes for the three-day long ‘Inter Regiment Athletic Championship Tournament - 2016’ that got off on Tuesday (12) at Diyagama Stadium, Diyagama, finished their year’s pinnacle of pride with a number of new athletic records on Thursday (14) evening amid rousing enthusiasm. 

The event, competed by over 1000 athletes of the SLAVF, belonging to more than 100 island-wide Volunteer Battalions, received further recognition and admiration on the final day (14) when the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva as the Chief Guest graced the colourfully-organized closing ceremony at the invitation of Major General Channa Goonetilleke, SLAVF Commandant and Colonel Commandant, Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers.       

On arrival at the stadium ground, the Chief Guest was warmly welcomed by the SLAVF Commandant, together with senior officers and conducted to the main stage as everything was set to get off the ground.  

A few new SLAVF and Army records were made in several track and field events during the tournament as hundreds of spectators burst into applause as their favourites were finishing the competitions. The winners were called out to receive trophies, laurels and certificates from the day’s Chief Guest afterwards as the event was reaching its climax.     
    
Minutes after the Chief Guest’s arrival, a drill display, presented by SLAVF soldiers set the stage ready for the finals, amid fluttering Army, SLAVF flags and Army Sports flag in the backyard.

The SLAVF Athletic Championship Tournament, now an annual feature in the SLAVF sports calendar, has emerged to be one of the much-awaited and promising events among sports lovers in the SLAVF which has been an impetus to the Sri Lanka Army throughout. The SLAVF providing the cream of professionals to the organization has so far fulfilled a praiseworthy service.  

The day’s event saw its culmination when the Commander of the Army read out the formal declaration of the closure of the events. With the lowering of the flags, the SLAVF tournament - 2016 ended amidst cheering and applause.

On Tuesday (12) Major General Channa Goonetilleke as the Chief Guest saw the commencement of the finals in the tournament during an opening ceremony.
