Volleyball Championship - 2018 Goes to SLAOC Regiment Players

Much-awaited finals of the Inter Regiment Volleyball Championship - 2018 of the Army got off the ground at Panagoda Indoor Stadium on Thursday (21). None other than the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake himself was there to witness the tussle and distribute awards to the achievers in the tournament, together with a host of other senior officers and volleyball fans in the Army.

The Chief Guest for the event was welcomed by Major General Devinda Perera, Chairman of the Army Volleyball Committee and Director General Personnel Administration (DGPA) and Major General Aruna Sudasingha, Director General Sports (DG Sports) as he arrived at the stadium.

Soon after the arrival of the Chief Guest, all players and referees showed up at the volleyball court and joined the singing of the Army song and observance of a two-minute silence before players and referees were introduced to the day's Chief Guest. Colour-rich Regimental marches, led by finalists amid sounding of rhythmic band beats then drew the attention of the spectators, prior to the commencement of the final match as the crowd of volleyball fans burst into roars of applause.

Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) volleyball team and Sri Lanka Ordnance Corps (SLAOC) volleyball team in the finals vied in a neck to neck spirit after they were selected as best teams for the finals. However, SLAOC after a breath-taking tough game emerged as Champions of the year (2018) VIR team had to be satisfied as the 1st runner-up place. The second runner-up place went to players in the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment as the meet drew to a close.

The apex of the day's event reached as the Commander of the Army began awarding medals, trophies and certificates to the winners.

During the same awarding sessions, achievers in the Inter Athletics Championship - 2018 were also recognized awarding awards to them.

Colonel Manjula Kariyawasam, Deputy Chairman, Army Volleyball Committee formally declared the culmination of the event by proposing the vote of thanks.

A large gathering with numbers of Senior Officers including Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana, Deputy Chief of Staff (DCOS) and Colonel of the Regiment VIR, Major General Rukmal Dias, Commandant of Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force and Colonel Commandant of Sri Lanka Artillery and Other Ranks watched the finals with enthusiasm.
