Visually-Impaired Army War Heroes to Play in World Cup - T20 in India

Four visually-handicapped Army War Heroes have been selected by Sri Lanka’s National Cricket Association for the Blind to represent the Sri Lankan team for the forthcoming World Cup - T20 in India.

The Sri Lankan squad, comprised of 17 multi-talented individuals from all over the island left here on Saturday (28) for New Delhi, India to participate in the second T20 World Cup for visually-handicapped cricketers.

The other participating teams are Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Bangladesh, Nepal and West Indies. Sri Lanka will play her opening match against New Zealand and then compete against West Indies, Pakistan, India and Nepal during 29 January - 12 February.

Commander of the Army taking a special interest in this participation directed the Director, Rehabilitation in the Army to make necessary arrangements for those visually-impaired War Heroes to represent the T20 World Cup - 2017.

Governed by the World Blind Cricket Council (WBCC) since 1996, Blind Cricket came into being for blind and partially-sighted players with adaptable versions with the support of many cricket-loving countries.

Cricket Association for the Blind in India is hosting this year’s T-20 World Cup, and the National Cricket Association for the Blind in Sri Lanka since early this year, has been conducting trials, coaching and selection matches, prior to the tournament in India.

Army War Heroes selected to participate in this tournament included Corporal J.P.D Ravindra, Corporal I.A.G Saman Kumara, Corporal I.D.K Sahan Kumara and Corporal W.G.L.S Bandara.
