'Viru Sisu Pradeepa - VI' Scholarships for Who Excelled in Grade 5

The sixth phase of the "Viru Sisu Pradeepa" scholarship scheme for children of war heroes was held at the Defence Services College under the patronage of Secretary Defence and Urban Development Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Friday (1).

The "Viru Sisu Pradeepa" Scholarship Scheme was launched in 2006 to assist the children of war heroes who have passed the grade five scholarship examination. Under the sixth phase 138 children of war hero families, comprised of Sri Lanka Army, Navy, Air Force and Police were awarded the "Viru Sisu Pradeepa" scholarships.

Under the programme each child received a Rs. 25,000.00 bank deposit, a schoolbag with books and stationery and also a till for a piggy bank. The Defence Services College was one of the schools which had produced the best results in the Western Province at the Grade 5 scholarship examination last year and the teachers who had tirelessly worked towards achieving this feat were also felicitated during the event.

Mr. Gotabaya Rajapakse, joined the distribution of the scholarships. Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Daya Rathnayake, Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Jayantha Perera, Chief of Staff of Sri Lanka Air Force Air Vice Marshal Gagan Bulathsinhala, Inspector General of the Police N.K. Illangakoon, Additional Secretaries of the Ministry of Defence, including S Hettiarachchi, D. M. S. D. Jayaratne and J. A. Ranjith and a large number of students and their parents were present at the occasion.
