Viru Daru Sports Meet Showcasing Their Talents Winds Up at Sugathadasa Stadium

Curtains came down on the second Army 'Viru Daru - 2012' (Children of War Heroes) Sports Meet at Sugathadasa Stadium on Sunday (28) evening, amidst greetings of goodwill and camaraderie.

Attaching a phenomenal importance to the second-ever sports meet, exclusively meant for children of War Heroes under the newly-founded umbrella organization, Army Viru Daru Society, had a number of track and field events in the past three days. At the invitation of the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Mr Lalith Weeratunge, Secretary to President graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Organized jointly by the Viru Daru Society and the Seva Vanitha Unit of the Gemunu Watch under the able guidance of the Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB), the pioneer behind the founding of the first-ever Viru Daru Society in the Army's history, the Viru Daru - 2012 Sports Meet had a large collection of track and field events, closely contested by hundreds of children of Army families, who are members of the Viru Daru Society.

The final victors received their merit awards from the Chief Guest Mr Lalith Weeratunge, Mrs Weeratunge, Commander of the Army and Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, SVAB. The overall championship of the meet was clinched by the Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps (SLAGSC) Viru Daru Society and the runners-up were the members of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) Viru Daru Society. The third place went to the Viru Daru Society of the Gemunu Watch (GW). The youngster Akila Imantha Nilaweera of the SLAGSC Viru Daru Society was adjudged the best sportsman while the SLAGSC Viru Daru Society member Adeesha Isuri Nilaweera won the trophy for the best sportswoman in the Meet.

Seconds after the arrival of the Chief Guest on Sunday (28), the final Track and Field events took place amidst big rounds of applause and cheering.

Mr Lalith Weeratunge in his brief address to the occasion said that sports as an integral requirement for life moulds both the character and the discipline of a person. He recalled His Excellency President’s contribution for the promotion of sports skills of the youth in the country. He also said that Defence Secretary shows and enormous interest in promoting sports among tri-services all the time.    

Symbolic of the official conclusion of the event, the Viru Daru - 2012 flag was afterwards handed over to the hosting Regiment in the year 2013, Sri Lanka Artillery.
