VIR Boxers for the Third Time Emerge Champions

The annual Inter Regiment Boxing Tournament that went on for 4 days (12 - 15 Feb) at Panagoda Indoor Stadium crowned Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) boxers as overall Champions for the third consecutive year during the finals on Friday (15).

Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army attached importance to the event by being a witness to the finals at the invitation of Major General Rukmal Dias, Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Boxing Committee.

VIR boxers giving a tough resistance to the rival Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC) boxers grabbed 4 Gold medals, 1 Silver medal and 1 Bronze medal as the final score board clicked. Out of 10 VIR boxers who competed in the tournament, 4 boxers emerged winners in 60 kg, 75 kg, 69 kg and 64 kg categories and won Gold medals. VIR claimed the championship for the unbroken 3rd year and made a historic record in the field of sports.

Private K.M.S.P Konara of 24 VIR (Gold - 60kg), Private D.S Dasanayake of 23 VIR (Gold - 75 kg), Private A.L.S.D Perera of 5 VIR (Gold - 69 kg) Private P.S.P Fernando of 24 VIR (Gold - 64 kg), Private P.M Wijewickrama of 10 (V) VIR (Silver - 81 kg) and Private N.A.Y.M Nissanka of 5 VIR (Bronze - 91 kg) were among the top achievers in the VIR.

Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC) with 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 3 Bronze medals were adjudged the first runner-up while the 3rd place went to Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) boxing team who won 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze medals.

Gunner H.M.L.P Jayawardene of SLAC was selected as the Best boxer and Corporal P.P.S Siriwardane of SLAC was rated the Best loser.

Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake as the Chief Guest gave away trophies and awards to the winners at the end of the finals. Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana, Deputy Chief of Staff and Colonel of the Regiment, VIR, Major General Rukmal Dias, Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Boxing Committee and Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Major General Sathyapriya Liyanage, Commander, Security Forces - West, Major General Anura Sudasingha, Director General Army Sports Board, Major General Jagath Gunawardena, Master General Ordinance and Colonel of the Regiment, Corps of Engineers Services, Brigadiers and several Senior Officers were present during the finals.Sports brands | Autres
