Vijayabahu Motor Cross Dazzles Boyagane Motor Racing Fans

Vijayabahu Motor Cross - 2017, the year’s thrilling event in the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) calendar, was held for the 15th consecutive year in the Vijayabahu Motor Cross Track in Boyagane, Kurunegala this morning (2), amidst a large gathering of enthusiasts and fans where Major General Mahesh Senanayake, Chief of Staff of the Army participated as the Chief Guest.

This year's race had 14 events, including the longest jump at Boyagane, one of the most seasoned tracks in the island where the participation of a Japanese rider was also reported. The riders had to overcome 2 double jumps and 3 single jumps in this 1.9 km long track. Three more events for children added fun and joy to the children of motor racing fans who attended the event.

The VIR Regiment has its own motor racing track, built in 1998 with a distance of 1.9 km and this is the most tough track in the country. The first race was held in the year 2000 with the participation of racing riders of the Sri Lanka Army, those of Wayamba province and island-wide with a view to popularizing the sport and creating avenues for riders to show their prowess.

Vijayabahu Motor Cross - 2017 race was powered by New Lanka Furniture Pvt Ltd as the main sponsor and the co-sponsors, Sri Lanka Insurance, Hutch PLC, CEAT, Kelani International Tyre (Pvt) Ltd, Honda and Elephant House.

Major General Mahesh Senanayake, Chief of Staff of the Army gave away the Army Commander’s trophy to Corporal Nihal Wijerathna of 7 VIR who showed exceptional skills.

Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana, Colonel of the Regiment, VIR gave away the Colonel of the Regiment Challenge Trophy to Corporal Sameera Premarathne of 1 VIR for his outstanding performances.

All proceeds of this Motor Cross are utilized for the welfare of disabled War Heroes and families of fallen War Heroes.
