US Pacific Command’s MCIP Workshop in Progress

The Planning Staff Workshop - 3 (PSW - 3) of the United States Pacific Command (USPACOM) on ‘Multinational Communication Interoperability Programme’ (MCIP), organized jointly by the Ministry of Defence, Sri Lanka Army and the USPACOM is now underway at Hotel Hilton with the participation of 50 delegates, including 39 foreign military officers representing 17 countries.

The PSW - 3 of the MCIP, meant to enhance international coordination, communicative interoperability and cooperation among all stakeholders in the Asian Pacific region with special focus on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations in emergencies is also an annual endeavour to interact with relevant parties and orientate them for all time preparedness.

The inaugural session on Monday (29), headed by Major General B.H.M.A Wijesinghe, Colonel Commandant, Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC) and Chief Signal Officer of the Sri Lanka Army, Colonel James McCallister of the US, Mrs Melanie Bower of the US and a few more senior representatives touched on sub topics such as MCIP objectives, its orientation and deliverables, emerging Cyber threats, Cyber hygiene, industrial security, internal threats, Cyber defence, etc.

Messrs Tom Grant, Eric Anderson, Colonel James McCallister, Mr Scott Griffin, Mr Tom Grant, Mrs Melanie Bower, all of them from the US, Major General B.H.M.A Wijesinghe, Lieutenant Colonel Asoka Gunasekara, Lieutenant Colonel Dhammika Vidanaralalage and one more officer of the Sri Lanka Army contributed to the inaugural sessions.

The participants evaluated the ‘Preparedness for Disaster Management’, ‘Technical Working’, ‘Global Disaster Risk Analysis’, ‘Prevention and Mitigation Application’, ‘MCIP Socialization’, ‘Multinational Communication Interoperability Guide (MCIG) Familiarization / JTIC Inerrability Hands on Assessment Validation,’ etc during the sessions on Tuesday (30) and Wednesday (31).

Representatives from Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Colombia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, New Zealand, Philippines, Thailand, Maldives, USA, Tonga, Papua New Guinea and Sri Lanka are attending the sessions.

The sessions, well-planned with the blessings of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crisanthe De Silva, draws to a close on Friday (2) during a closing ceremony, graced by Major General Mahesh Senanayake, Chief of Staff of the Army as the Chief Guest.
