UN Special Representative Holds Talks with Visiting Commander


Acting Head of the Department of the Peacekeeping Operations and Assistant Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations Mr Edmond Mulet, who is also the Head of the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) and Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, had a round of discussion with the visiting Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, currently in New York.

Mr Mulet during his cordial meeting with the Sri Lanka’s Army Chief exchanged views of importance on several matters of UN deployments as peacekeepers and humanitarian and community-oriented roles, being rendered by Sri Lankan contingent (SRIBAT) in Haiti.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya during his dialogue with the UN official acknowledging the continued UN support in the execution of SRIBAT operational duties reminded that Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the elimination of ruthless terrorism were now better designed for more and more international assignments in peacetime.

Before the Commander left UN office, he presented a memento to the UN official, symbolizing healthy relations and working partnership that prevails between the UN Peacekeeping agency and the Army.

Major General Shavendra Silva, Deputy UN Representative for Sri Lanka was also associated with the meeting.

Earlier, the visiting Sri Lanka’s Army Chief Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya met Lieutenant General Babacar Gaye, Military Adviser and UN Assistant Secretary for Department of Peacekeeping Operations and Ms Susana Malcorra, Under Secretary General of the Department of Field Support at UN Peacekeeping Headquarters for separate meetings on matters of bilateral relevance to both the UN agency and the Sri Lanka Army.

MINUSTAH, a UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti that has been in operation since 2004 is composed of 8,940 military personnel and 3,711 Police and concentrates on assisting the Haitian National Police, maintenance of law and order, provision of humanitarian aid, community projects, etc.

As at present, a 950 strong Sri Lankan contingent is serving in Haiti for the MINUSTAH.
