UN Special Envoy Takes Stock of Relief Programmes

SPECIAL ENVOY to UN General Secretary Mr. K.V. Nambihar visited Vavuniya Thursday (21) morning to get a first hand experience on the developments regarding IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) centres and to learn welfare measures in effect for them.

The UN envoy with his entourage was received by Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army and Competent Authority for the Northern Province Major General G.A. Chandrasiri at Menik Farm before they were accompanied to Kadiragamar relief village and temporary IDP centres at Sector 01 and Sector 04.

A meeting to exchange views of the UN officials and responsible authorities was held at the field conference hall in Menik Farm afterwards where special attention was drawn on enhancement and streamlining of the welfare programmes for the IDPs. 

The delegation was briefed on rescue mission that salvaged nearly 200,000 Wanni civilians and measures being adopted by authorities to provide relief until their resettlement.

Mr. Nambihar who expressed his satisfaction over the arrangements had an aerial view of the destroyed LTTE strongholds, former “No Fire Zone” and LTTE-destroyed Jordanian FARAH-3 ship.      

Minister of Disaster Management and Resettlement Mr. Rishad Badurdeen and a few of his Ministerial officials were also present on the occasion.
