Ugandan Defence Minister Calls on Commander

A foreign delegation from the Ministry of State for Defence of Uganda, headed by, General (Rtd) Odongo Jeje, Minister of State for Defence of Uganda, currently in Sri Lanka, made a courtesy visit to the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake Tuesday (28) afternoon at the Army Headquarters.

The delegation, led by General (Rtd) Odongo Jeje, Minister of State for Defence of Uganda, comprises Lieutenant General Charles Angina, Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Brigadier James Mugira, Managing Director, Lwero Industries Limited, Brigadier J.W Byarugaba, Chief of Legal Services, Brigadier Ramadhan Kyamulesire, Chief of Legal Services and Major Charles Aremu, Military Assistant to Minister of State for Defence. Mr V Kannannathan, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Uganda was also in attendance during the meeting.

During the meeting both General (Rtd) Odongo Jeje, Minister of State for Defence and Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake exchanged views on matters, related to training and promotion and sharing of experiences between both organizations.

Lieutenant General Ratnayake invited the Ugandan Army to share Sri Lanka’s battlefield experiences and learn from each other. He also requested them to liaise closely with military organized events, such as the annual Defence Seminar, Exercise Cormorant Strike, Sniper Course, etc.

The Ugandan delegation showing a keen interest on the Army’s Special Forces wanted Sri Lankan Army to organize a training programme for Ugandan servicemen since Special Forces have become very popular among the Armed Forces of Uganda. ‘We are very impressed with their skills and the training given to them in Sri Lanka. We would therefore like to have more interactive approaches with our Sri Lankan counterpart in the future,’ the visiting Ugandan Minister said.      

They also discussed several other matters of mutual interest and bilateral importance to both the Ugandan Army and the Sri Lankan Army.

Towards the conclusion of the brief formal meeting, Lieutenant General Ratnayake presented the visiting Ugandan Minister with a memento. The gesture was reciprocated. Before his departure, the visiting Minister left his signature in the VIP book at the Commander’s office.

Chief of Staff, Deputy Chief of Staff, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force Commandant, Adjutant General, Director General General Staff, Master General Ordnance, Quarter Master General, Military Secretary and Military Assistant to the Commander of the Army were present during the meeting.  

General (Rtd) Odongo Jeje and his delegation during their five-day stay in Sri Lanka is scheduled to meet Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development, Chief of Defence Staff, Navy and Air Force Commanders, Security Force Commander - Jaffna, Vice Chancellor at Kotelawala Defence University, Director General at Disaster Management Centre, Chief Executive Officer at Lanka Logistic and Technology Limited and a few other officials.

In addition, the delegation is expected to visit the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna and several other places of tourist interest.
