Troops in Their Hundreds Fight Against Dengue

More than 680 Army personnel covering Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kurunegala, Kandy, Matale, Batticaloa and Jaffna Districts joined hands with the ongoing ‘Dengue’ eradication project on Thursday (22) after identifying most vulnerable areas in above Districts.

To be in line with the government’s directive, Sri Lanka Army was one of the firsts to launch the fight against Dengue epidemic, following the coordination, effected through the office of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) a few months ago.

680 members of the Army serving in above-mentioned Districts under different Security Force Headquarters joined hands with the national drive, ‘Dengue’ eradication programme on Friday (22) on the directions of the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake.

Following a request of HE the President, a comprehensive national programme for eradication of Dengue with the support of all health officials, government employees, members of the general public, tri-service, Police and Civil Security Department personnel got underway in most-affected and other vulnerable areas across the country as a national priority.

Under the programme, all volunteers cleaned up public places, such as Railway Stations, Hospitals, Bus Stands, Bus Depots, School premises, Markets, Temples and all other vulnerable spots.

Soldiers in particular assisted health authorities, local government authorities and the general public searching for mosquito breeding places, cleaning areas and conducting various other Dengue control projects as well as enlightening the public on its prevention.

Apart from Dengue Control day, the Army has already conducted many other programmes to clean the environment and eliminate mosquito breeding places in main cities of the country and efforts will continue in the coming weeks as well as a regular practice.
