Troops Support Rescue of Elephant in Well

Sri Lanka Army’s 11 Field Engineers lent their machinery to the Wildlife Conservation Department at Vavuniya in order to rescue an elephant, fallen and trapped in a well dug for cultivation purposes in Muthiyankaddu village area in Mullaittivu.

On being informed of the elephant’s fate, the 643 Brigade Commander serving the Security Force Headquarters, Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) alerted the Vavuniya Wildlife Conservation Department and requested their intervention at the earliest.

With the support of 30 Battalion Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) troops serving the area, 11 Field Engineers brought down their excavator machinery and made necessary arrangements for the elephant to get out of the trap on the instructions of Mr Herath, Wildlife Department officer who came there to supervise and instruct.

The operation on Tuesday (11) ended around mid-noon setting the elephant free back into the jungles.
