Troops on Round the Clock Flood Relief Duties

Disaster relief teams of the Sri Lanka Army in the North, Wanni and the Eastern Provinces, despite risks involved in rescue and relief operations, are continuing their good Samaritan roles in the midst of ravaging waters and torrential rains in the past 24 hours.       

As late as Monday (22) evening, 143 Brigade troops of the Security Force Headquarters-Wanni (SFHQ-W) rushed to the rescue of more than 83 families in Elawankulam and Manatu areas in the Puttalam District who remained cut off due to flood waters, surrounding their villages. They were immediately relocated to the Elawankulam Muslim college and the Manatu Church as temporary measures.    

Troops belonging to several Battalions, Brigades and Davison under Security Force Headquarters-Wanni (SFHQ-W),  Security Force Headquarters-East (SFHQ-E) and Security Force Headquarters-West (SFHQ-West) are round the clock working  in flood-affected areas under the close supervision of respective SFHQs Commanders, General Officers Commanding, Brigade Commanders and Unit Commanders.

 Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army has been in touch with respective authorities, giving necessary instructions.

At the request of authorities in the Government Railways, Army personnel of the SFHQ-E, using heavy machinery assisted the flood-damaged railway track between Welikanda and Batticaloa during December 21 - 22.

Using sand bags, SFHQ-E troops meanwhile jump into action and restored a leak in the Minneriya Tank and another one in Kadulla Lake, thus preventing major catastrophes on Monday (22).   

Troops of 6 Sri Lanka Armourd Corps (SLAC), 5 and 8 Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA), 7 Sri Lanka Engineer (SLE), 17 Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI), 2 (V) Gajaba Regiment (GR), 4 Special Force (SF), 4 Sri Lanka Service Corps (SLASC) and 8 Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) serving under SFHQ-E, in the meantime, rescued more and more flood-affected civilians in Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee and Batticaloa areas and attended to the immediate preventive measures at ground level in Alleswatta, Puliyankulama, Soliadi, Sumedhagama, Thulsiripura, et al.

In another development, the radial gates of the Iranamadu Tank had to be opened by the Irrigation Department officials in the presence of a group of government officials and the Commander, Security Force Headquarters-Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) on Monday (22) after its water level went up as high as 31 ft.

Meanwhile, 20 Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) and 18 Gajaba Regiment (GR) troops, engaged in rescue and immediate relief operations in flood-affected areas in Pudumuruppu, Shivanagar and Urthipuram in Kilinochchi area of the 66 Division, SFHQ-KLN on Monday (22), provided cooked meals to rescued people who have been temporarily housed in schools and some other public buildings.

In the eastern theatre, a total of 21,850 families remain confined to relief centres, managed jointly by Disaster Management Centre and Army troops. Steps have been taken to provide cooked meals to the inmates.

Similarly, about 500 people affected in Thopoor and Kattaparichchan North of the SFHQ-E area of responsibility were given cooked meals packets by 5 SLA Regiment troops in the past two days.

In the meantime, SLAC troops in an exceptional move, rescued a herd of cattle plus seven shepherds who had gone to bring cattle home in the general area of Morawewa, Trincomalee.
