Troops on Invitation Clean Up Mallavi Base Hospital Premises

More than 500 Army personnel of the 65 Division under the Security Force Headquarters - Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) at the request of Dr Kandaswamy Susinderan, Chief Medical Officer at Mallavi Base Hospital in Thunukkai area recently joined hands together with more than 300 civilians, medical staff, Civil Security Department personnel and other volunteers for a full-day ‘Shramadana’ (self-help) cleaning programme in the hospital premises.

Major General Sarath Weerawardena, General Officer Commanding, 65 Division in response to a request made to him by the Chief Medical Officer supported the move as incidence of Dengue was reportedly on the increase in the area.

The Mallavi Base Hospital, lying in an area of more than 20 acres is the major health institution in the province and draws hundreds of patients on a daily basis but a part of the hospital compound and its surroundings remained covered with shrubs and wild plants, allowing mosquito breeding spots to thrive.

Alert to the dangers, the Chief Medical Officer has taken the initiative in this regard and sought the assistance of the troops serving in the area in a letter addressed to the General Officer Commanding, 65 Division.

At the end of the day’s cleaning programme, the troops also donated 150 new flower pots to the hospital for beautification of the premises.
