Troops Avert Kurunegala Lake Bund Split Stacking Sand Bags

Troops of the 53 Division rising to the occasion jumped into action at Kurunegala and averted a disastrous flooding by immediately stacking a large number of sand bags around the Kurunegala tank bund beginning Friday night (25).

Torrential rains water filled the Kurunegala Lake and began to reach spill level causing a threat to the heart of the town.

A total of 25 Army personnel of the 8 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) of the 532 Brigade stacked sand bags around the tank bund under the guidance of Brigadier Dammika Jayasundara, 532 Brigade Commander soon after the alarming situation was brought to the notice of the troops. Sri Lanka National Guard troops also assisted the operation.

Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army paying highest priority to the disaster situation in the country has instructed relevant Senior Officers to monitor developments and implement all necessary measures in close cooperation with state agencies and respective local authorities as necessary.

Members of the Army, together with members of the other state agencies are currently engaged in flood relief emergencies in worst-affected areas while another four-digit number is on standby.
