Totally Dependent Southern War Heroes To Be Housed In Second Wellness Resort, 'Abimansala-2': Ground Breaking on Thursday (19)

Sri Lanka Army, affording its deserving recognition as well as the most vital element of sharing and caring to permanently dependent valiant unsung War Heroes of our times,  is set to embark on the challenging task of erecting the second wellness resort, ‘Abimansala-2’ in the South at Wilpitawatta, Udumulla under Athuraliya Divisional Secretariat.

The auspicious ground-breaking and foundation-laying ceremony for this state of the art complex for lifetime rest and relaxation for 48 more South-based dependent War Heroes with much-needed physical and medical therapeutic needs will take place on Thursday (19) at the venue, the architect of the project, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army announced Tuesday (17) evening during a media briefing at Army Headquarters.

The new ‘Abimansala-2’ project, estimated to cost around Rs 240 million upon completion lies in a 10-acre serene natural environment with rich bio-diversity and waterways, bordering ‘Haliela Wewa’, and was donated by Land Reforms Commission in response to a request, extended by the Commander of the Army with the blessings of the Secretary Defence Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

‘28 disable soldiers, but still able to move about on wheelchairs are to be housed in seven Villas, four in each Villa while totally dependent remainder of 20 more War Heroes who constantly need the medical attention are to be accommodated in a state of the art ward to be built as per medical advice. Screening and medical categorization of those disable War Heroes were done by the Medical Advisor in the Army considering their gravity of the disability,’ the Commander said at the press briefing.

‘The proposed site is one of the most ideal places for the project in the area since it is by the side of natural waterways in a serene environment. The architecture of the construction has been designed, considering the slope nature of the ground, different to that of Anuradhapura Abimansala. The complex will unlike in Anuradhapura have only one two-storied administrative building at the entrance to the premises. But all the modern technological and medical accessories and facilities, similar to those in Anuradhapura, will be the same and made available to those dependent War Heroes,’ the Commander added.

'The feedback we get from Anuradhapura Abimansala is most encouraging and people and school children visiting this place speak high of its service towards those disable soldiers. Never have we heard of a wellness resort of this nature, having built exclusively for dependent War Heroes in anywhere in the world. It is in fact a great meritorious act. Similarly, our previous sponsors have once again pledged their support for the new construction at Wilpitawatta. In fact, all planned seven Villas in the new project have already been sponsored, being the latest verbal confirmation received from the Commercial Bank for sponsorship of a Villa, the Commander underlined.

In response to a media query, the Commander further said that the third Abimansala project for dependent War Heroes would be erected in the North Western (Wayamba) province. Preliminary surveying and preparation of a blueprint are in the pipeline and work is expected to commence soon. ‘We are getting funds for erection of these wellness resorts for our totally dependent War Heroes numbering about 228 in total as per most serious medical category,’ the Commander elaborated.

The proposed Wilpitawatta ‘Abimansala-2’ will provide those War Heroes with Therapeutic Aids, 7 Villas, 5 Cottages, Ward Complex for 20 inmates, Swimming Pool, Gymnasium, Physiotherapy Unit, Medical Wing, Medical Laboratory, Library, Indoor Stadium, Entertainment Hall, Dining Hall, Auditorium, Kitchen, Herbal Treatment (Ayurveda) Centre and a few more essential wings.

Thursday’s (19) ground-breaking ceremony, headed by Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army, together with Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) whose organization has thrown its full weight behind realization of the vision and the mission of this new wing, will occur under three major phases; thread laying, first sod cutting and the foundation-stone laying. All the sponsors will join the auspicious events taking place in the ceremony.

The SVAB spearheaded ‘Brave Hearts’ project will find funds, as it successfully did in the pioneering Anuradhapura ‘Abimansala’ instance in the year 2011, now fully functional.

Island-wide and overseas grateful donors and philanthropists overwhelmingly supported the Anuradhapura pilot project which saw its opening on 26 July 2011 with the distinguished presence of HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa. A few more such Wellness Resorts are to be a reality at provincial levels in the future.

The proposed ‘Abimansala 2’ project, even before its cornerstone-laying ceremony gets underway, has received heartening confirmed patronage for construction of 6 Villas from Mas Holdings (Pvt) Ltd, Sri Lanka Insurance, Singer (Pvt) Ltd, David Wickramarathna Company (Pvt) Ltd, Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment Seva Vanitha Unit and Sri Lanka Army Service Corps Seva Vanitha Unit to-date. Each Villa costs Rs 5.25 million.

Likewise, renowned gem entrepreneurs, led by Mr Jinadasa Guruge, Vinil Menik and the Association for Gem Traders as well as Dilmah (Pvt) Ltd,   have undertaken the completion of 5 Cottages in the complex, exclusively meant for permanently disabled and dependent War Heroes in the Southern province. One Cottage is estimated at Rs 4 million.

The estimated cost for the swimming pool is Rs 15.5 million and the entire project is to see its fruition within a period of one year with active support of the Corps of Engineer Services (CES) and different experts in relevant fields.

A large gathering of invitees, donors, war heroes, SVAB officials, senior officers, district and divisional secretaries, state officials and members of the public are expected to attend the inaugural stone-laying ceremony.
