Three Woman Soldiers, Only Sri Lankans Selected for ‘Raid Amazones - 2018’

The ‘Raid Amazones - 2018’, the 18th edition of the world’s biggest adventure challenge for ladies which is now underway in the East coast of Sri Lanka in and around Pasikudah, Thoppigala and Kalkudah with events, like cycling, canoeing and running during 11-18 October was joined by 3 woman soldiers of 5 (Volunteer) Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC), Sri Lanka’s only three representatives, privileged to have been included in the world famous adventure expedition.

Security Force Headquarters - East (SFHQ-E), extending their cooperation to the adventurous event facilitated three of their major phases, a 48km-long cycling event, 23km-long running event and a 9km beach run which were held at Thoppigala, Kiran and Kalkudah beach areas (232 Brigade area) under the supervision of the Commander, 232 Brigade, Colonel Roshan Jayamanna on 15, 17 and 18 October 2018 on the instructions of the Commander, Security Forces - East (SF-East), Major General Santhusitha Pananwala.

‘Raid Amazones’ tests the skills, determination and teamwork of the contestants. Its expedition in Sri Lanka is attended by 270 foreign ladies from more than 25 countries.

Woman soldiers of 5 (V) SLAWC, Sergeant S.L Gamage, Lance Corporal W.A Nilmini and Private J.M.G.P Ruwanmalee who were the only Sri Lankan ladies given the opportunity to participate in this event representing the host country, a recognition given to the Army.

This international adventurous event, exclusively designed for ladies in the world had been conducted twice in Dambulla previously in 2009 and 2014.
