With the goal of producing its own steel essentials, including the much-needed beds for island-wide troops, the Army opened this state-of-the-art Ordnance Factory at Dombagoda on 1st September, and the following day (Sept 2), another mega Industrial Workshop at Kosgama for production of all varieties of own barrack equipment, machinery tools and accessories, heralding a new era of ‘Army Industry’ for the first time in its history.

On the date of the opening at Dombagoda, the Commander instructed the factory’s Commandant to set a target of delivering 500 brand new steel beds to the Army by Sept 15 as the maiden consignment of the factory.

The ceremonial delivery of the stock on Friday (19) marks another milestone in the Army’s forward march and signals that the organization is capable of saving a huge chunk of expenditure, generally made for purchase of steel equipment and accessories which are generally durable and long-lasting.

The Commander through these projects expects to develop the Army skill capital, innovative creation and promotion of modern technology, access to quality products, and savings of foreign exchange and local costs, supply of critical needs of the Army on priority basis while simultaneously providing a second career option for hundreds of retired soldiers whose craftsmanship, could still be harnessed for a worthy cause.

Under these new projects at Panadura, Dombagoda and Kosgama, identified barrack items, metal beds and light items are to be manufactured with available resources under the first phase.

The next stage of production will focus on aluminum related works in the Army before the project moves to fasting-related works. Production of gas stoves, towel racks, chairs, cupboards, wheelbarrows, souvenirs, etc will also receive priority after modalities are brought in place.
