Tamil Students Given Free Educational Accessories by Retired Army Officer & Friends

With the objective of encouraging Tamil students of low-income group families for studies, 553 Brigade troops of the 55 Division of the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J) recently coordinated the free distribution of school accessories to 223 students in Muruththankerni area during a simple ceremony at Thalladi Roman Catholic Tamil Mixed School (RCTMS) Palaly.

The stock of exercise books, pens and other accessories, donated by the retired Army officer, Major Aruna Perera and a group of his friends and associates was worth a few lakhs and the donation on Friday (2) coincided with the school’s final day in the third term.

As another segment of the day’s programme, the same group of donors, including several medical officers of the Gampaha District, held a medical camp for students and civilians in the area where hundreds were examined and diagnosed.

A stock of medicine was also distributed after the medical camp and some of the patients were referred to the peripheral hospitals in different locations.

Major General Nirmal Dharmarathne, General Officer Commanding, 55 Division graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Buddhist, Hindu and Catholic priests, Brigadier Dammika Jayasundara, Commander 553 Brigade, Lieutenant Colonel Harischandra Mayasinghe, Chief Coordinating Civil Affairs Officer, Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna, Lieutenant Colonel Upul Hathurusinghe, Commanding Officer 10th Battalion Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, Mr. K Kanageshwaran, Secretary at Maruthankerny Pradeshiya Sabha, Mr. S Nanda Kumar, Director, Zonal Education for Maruthankerny, Mr. S. Balachandran, Principal, Thalladi RCTMS, Teachers, students, soldiers and civilians were present during the distribution of school accessories and the conduct of the medical clinic.
