Supreme Court Judges Receive Updates from IDP Centres

WITH THE objective of receiving an update, in relation to living conditions, facilities and pending re-settlement programmes of Settikulama-based Relief Village (Manik Farm) Internally Displaced Persons, a six member delegation of Supreme Court judges paid a visit to the area during the weekend.

Supreme Court Judges, Ashoka de Silva, P.A Rathnayake, Jagath Balapatabendi, K. Sri Pavan, S.I Imam and Ms. Chandra Eakanayake on arrival at the entrance to the Relief Village were received by Major General G.A Chandrasiri, Competent Authority for IDPs in Northern Province who conducted them later to the field auditorium in the Relief Village complex.

Major General G.A Chandrasiri, giving a detailed comprehensive account on facilities provided to those Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) and measures being taken for expansion and promotion of their welfare work briefed the visiting delegates on government’s continuing accelerated programme for re-settlement in their places of original residence. It was also pointed out that nearly 300,000 displaced and rescued civilians were living in those centers in Vavuniya after the LTTE was eliminated.

The group afterwards observed Kadiragamar Relief Village and people living in Zones I, II, III, IV. The visiting judges evaluating infrastructure network in place at those IDP centers expressed their satisfaction and made specific inquiries into specific needs for improvement. Judge Ashoka de Silva commented on behalf of his fellow-judges before the team left the premises. The delegation flew back to Colombo, the same evening.
