Students in Jaffna Welfare Centres Donated Incentives

Troops of the 521 Brigade of the 52 Division under the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J) in one more humanitarian project organized a programme to distribute school accessories among 25 more under-privileged students, living in welfare centres with the sponsorship, provided by several civil sector donors.

It was conducted on the instructions of the Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J), Major General Darshana Hettiararchchi by the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 52 Division, Major General Laksiri Waduge for children attending schools in Yogapuram and Selvapuram in Jaffna on Saturday (24).

Each gift pack to the value of Rs 5000/= was sponsored by both Mr Madawa Manchanayake and Mr Thusitha Fernando.

This community-oriented empowering programme was an initiative aimed at encouraging education of the children in less-privileged families and schools in Jaffna. It was conducted in line with the series of community-oriented welfare programmes organized by the Sri Lanka Army with the aim of supporting the livelihoods of poor families and students.

Teachers of the respective schools and children expressed their gratitude to the Army during a brief speech afterwards.

The Chief Guest to the occasion, Major General Laksiri Waduge, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 52 Division and Senior Officers on arrival were warmly welcomed by teachers and students in the schools. The proceedings formally commenced with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp and the welcome note, being read out by the school principal. Coordination for donors was also done by the GOC considering the importance of the offer.

This project was initiated under the coordination of the 22 (V) Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) commanded by Major Lalith Samarakoon under the instructions of 521 Brigade Commander, Colonel Sujeewa Hettiarchchi.

Students and teachers appreciated the efforts taken by the Army to lend their assistance to uplift educational facilities of needy students in Jaffna welfare centres.

Senior Officers, Officers, teachers, parents and students attended the ceremony.
