State Minister of Defence Hon Ruwan Wijewardane, together with the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, Monday (6) morning visited the explosion site at Salawa Army camp with a view to evaluating and inspecting the extent of the damage.
A fire emanated in the Salawa Army camp ammunition storage Sunday (5) at about 5.45 p.m. which lasted for more than 6 - 7 hours gutted the camp complex, prompting the Security Forces and the Police to evacuate civilians from the nearby surroundings. One soldier succumbed to burn injuries and the spreading fire and shrapnel injured several people, including one soldier.
Minister Wijewardane, together with the Commander went to see the affected storage area and other buildings during the tour and saw for themselves the extent of the damage. After some time, the Chief Minister for Western Province also came to the area.
