Sri Lankan Peace Keepers Mark Traditional New Year

HAITI-BASED Sri Lankan Peace Keeping contingent took time off to celebrate the traditional Sinhala-Hindu New Year, giving a new experience to the spectators. 

The venue, 11 Sribat Headquarters in Leogane was packed with spectators as the peace keepers commenced traditional Avurudu Games such as tugs of war, grease pole climbing, hurdle runs, pot cracking, bun eating, pillow fighting, balancing of lemon, etc.

The ceremony commenced after the contingent Commander Colonel K.J Jayaweera lit the traditional oil lamp. He also read out the Army Commander’s New Year message on the occasion. Later, all those present at the venue were treated to Sri Lankan sweetmeats.
