Sri Lanka Army Men’s Handball Team Once Again Proves Their Dominance, Wins the Inaugural National Handball Championship

Having won the Defense Services Handball Tournament last year and Open Invitation tournament organized by the Sri Lanka Air Force to mark their 60th Anniversary this year; the Sri Lanka Army Men’s Handball team reached another significant mile stone, wining the Inaugural National Handball Championship 2011 organized by the Handball Federation of Sri Lanka (HFSL). Ten teams competed against each other showing their prowess and skills to win the Padmini Rajapaksha Championship Trophy at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, Colombo over a period of three days from 20th May to 22nd May 2011.

Army men dominating from the inception and conveniently beating strong competitors like Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) and Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) at the initial encounters; over powered SLAF once again at the finals to win the Championship.

Army Women’s team made their best effort but lost to SLN by three points, having equalized with SLAF playing Round Robin thus lost the chance of qualifying for the finals due to lack of points. But they could secure third place in the tournament beating Batticaloa and Ampara at the last rounds contesting against five teams.
