Sprinter Amarasekara Gifted with a New House

Appreciative of achievements hitherto made in the field of sports and laurels he has fetched to both the Army and the country at large as a veteran sprinter, Warrant Officer-1 D.A.P Sampath Amarasekara of 6 Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA) of the Army, was awarded a modern house on Thursday (9) by the Army with sponsorship support received from a few donors.

Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, Commander of the Army after visiting the new house at Kiriwaththuduwa early this morning (9), greeted the athlete and handed over the replica of the key to the house during a simple ceremony, attended by family members, well-wishers and a host of Army officers and other invitees.

Sri Lanka Army as the major stakeholder in the project, together with Engineer Service Regiment (ESR) and Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA), spent both their labour and money for construction of the new house.

Financial support, received from Hon Namal Rajapaksa (MP), Mr Ranga Wickramasinghe, Sri Lanka Athletic Association and High Fashion Garments at Homagama, too contributed to the completion of the project. The house cost Rs. 3 million and the 10.5 perch land to the reputed athlete, was earlier donated by the Ministry of Sports to him in recognition of his athletic attainments.

The sprinter, Warrant Officer-1 Amarasekara in the past decade, took part in many an international tournament, bagging Gold, Silver and Bronze medals or a leading place in respective events.

Outstanding were Gold Medals, Silver Medals and Bronze Medals (400 m) he has won at 17th Asian Games - 2008 (Gold) in Jordan, Asian Athletic Tournament - 2011 (400 m) in China (Gold), South Asian Athletic Tournament - 2008 (Gold with a new record) in India, Asian Athletic Tournament - 2008 (Gold) in Thailand, Defence Services Athletic Tournament - 2010 (Gold), National Championship - 2010 (Gold), First National Selection Tournament - 2008 (Gold), Inter Regiment Athletic Tournament - 2007 (Gold with a new record), Asian Athletic Tournament - 2007 (Gold) in India, Asian Athletic Tournament - 2007 (Gold) and many other tournaments which were represented by him on behalf of the country or the organization.

Warrant Officer-1 Amarasekara after he began his athletic career in the year 2001 soon after he joined the Army in December 2000, has to-date participated in more than 110 athletic events, both here and abroad, collecting scores of medals which he proudly displayed to the visiting Chief Guest, Lieutenant General Ratnayake, inviting him to unveil the special wall cupboard used for that purpose.

The Chief Guest on arrival was welcomed by Warrant Officer-1 Amarasekara and his spouse before house-warming rites and rituals got underway at the venue as the auspicious minute reached.

Major General E.M.M Ambanpola, Colonel Commandant, Engineer Service Regiment, Major General Amal Karunasekara, President, Army Athletic Association, Major General J.C Rambukpotha, Chief of Staff, Office of the Chief of Defence Staff, Mr Sunil Gunawardana and Ms Badra Gunawardana, Coaches and several other senior officers, were associated with the opening ceremony.
