Special Forces Salute President Rajapaksa in Wanni

HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, attending the Wanni District Development Review forum at the newly constructed auditorium at Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni (SFHQ - W), Vavuniya on Tuesday (19), was greeted with a Guard of Honour, accorded by valiant and battle-hardened soldiers of the Special Forces, who made history once again by saluting a state head for the first time since its raising.

The visiting HE the President on arrival at the SFHQ - W entrance was received by Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, in the company of Commander, SFHQ - W and senior officers. He was afterwards conducted to receive the Guard of Honour, accorded by the Special Forces with two officers and ninety-six soldiers in attendance. After the salute, HE the President was invited to chair the meeting for Wanni progress review. 

The review forum, presided by HE the President Rajapaksa, took place at the new spacious auditorium, opened just three days ago by Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya at the SFHQ - W premises. 

Ministers, Wanni District Parliamentarians, Secretary Defence, Secretary to Ministry of Finance, Governor for Northern Province, Secretaries to relevant ministries, Provincial Councillors, heads of government departments, Security Forces Commanders for Wanni, Kilinochchi, Mullaittivu and Jaffna  , District Secretaries and a host of relevant policy and decision makers attended the forum at SFHQ - W.

Respective Commanders at formations took part in the forum since thousands of soldiers are engaged in different development projects in various areas in Wanni and the North.

Later on, HE the President Rajapaksa made a trip down to the Omanthai railway station and railway line under construction, in order to get a first hand glimpse of the ongoing work. He was welcomed by Governor for Northern Province Major General G. A  Chandrasiri (retd) on arrival at Omanthai.

President Rajapaksa saw for himself a train on track for trial on the new railway line and how railway work was fast progressing. The construction work has cost about Rs. 400 million for the 10 km stretch from Thandikulam up to Omanthai so far under the ‘Uthuru Mithuru’ project. The government expects to run the service up to Omanthai before the end of this year.
