SLSR Athletics Championship Ends with Future Hopes

The Inter Battalion Athletics Championship - 2018 of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR), producing a new breed of potential athletes to both the Army and the country drew to a close Thursday (17) evening at Sugathadasa International Stadium, Colombo in the presence of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake.

Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army was welcomed by Major General Piyal Wickramaratne, Colonel of the Regiment, SLSR on arrival before the formal welcome speech was delivered.

More than 900 athletes comprised of Officers and Other Rankers of the SLSR representing all Battalions competed in the competition during 16-17 May.

Final day’s events included 400 m Final, 800 m Final, 100 m Final, 4 x 100 m Relay, 4 x 100 m invitation relay-schools, 4 x 200 m Invitation Relay- Inter Regiments and medley Relay.

The Trophy for the best athlete was secured by Lance Corporal A.M.L.P Gunarathne of the 5 (V) SLSR.

Meanwhile, 7 SLSR Battalion secured the championship title in the tournament.

In the sports event among the invited schools, the 1st place was secured by St. Benedicts College.

From the 4 x 200 m Invitation Relay- Inter Regiments sport event, the 1st place was won by the Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (SLASC) team.

Adding much more glamour to the day’s event, troops of the Civil Security Department (CSD) showcased a cultural event during the day’s proceedings.

The day’s Chief Guest, the commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake awarded the best athlete trophy to Lance Corporal Gunarathna during the ceremony.

Towards the culmination of the scheduled programme, Brigadier Rajeev Wickramasinghe of the SLSR delivering the Vote of Thank extended his appreciative remarks thanking regards for the distinguished invitees, senior officers, invited schools sports teams and the gathering.

All these events gave sense of encouragement and excitement to all the spectators. The SLSR as one of the most leading regiments in the Sri Lanka Army has been kept unparalleled records in the field of athletics during last five decades, having produced few International sportsmen from the inception of the Regiment.

Mrs Chandrika Senanayake, President of the Army Seva Vanitha Unit was also present at the occasion.
