SLNG ‘Esala’ Zone Attracts Many Hundreds

‘Ethugalpurayai Daham Amavai’, the annual ‘Esala’ Zone, organized by the Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG), headquartered in Wehera, Kurunegala for the 3rd successive year got underway at Kurunegala Maligapitya Grounds during July 8 - 9.

The project, themed on ‘Ethugalpurayai Daham Amavai’ came into effect as a programme to further enhance the goodwill and understanding between civilians and the Army, following a conceptual notion of Major General Piyal Wickramarathna, Colonel of the Regiment, SLNG.

On the inaugural day (8), leading prelates and members of the Maha Sangha were conducted to the ‘Esala’ Zone in a colourful procession before the formal opening of the Zone took place. Amid Pirith chanting after the traditional oil lamp was lit, the day’s Chief Guest, Major General Piyal Wickramarathna switched on the lights in the ‘Esala’ Zone, in which more than 50 colourful lanterns, skillfully crafted by soldiers had been kept on display, some of which had won prizes in mega Vesak lantern competitions, held in Colombo in May.

Members of the SLNG entertained hundreds of sightseers to refreshing herbal drinks and conducted devotional song recitals (Bhakthi Gee) late into the night inside the zone on both days. Major General Manoj Mudannayake, Commander, Forward Maintenance Area - East and several senior officers, attended the closing ceremony on the final day of the arrangement.
